Why Are Roofing Battens of Steel Considered the Best?

Roofing battens perform several essential functions in a roof structure. They provide a surface for fixing roof tiles and carry the weight of those roofing tiles. They also help to support the imposed loads caused by snow and wind during the construction, and they may even provide a foothold during installation. However, we recommend only doing this where the batten is directly over a rafter. 

With so much relying on the roofing battens of steel, specifying the correct product is essential – and failure to comply with the relevant standards could impact the overall life expectancy of the roof. This guide aims to help you understand the requirements as well as recognise the differences between products.

A History of Metal Battens for Ceiling: 

Board and batten metal roofing and siding have a long history in construction. In siding applications, when wood panels were first used in construction, wood battens were placed over the panel joints to provide additional weather resistance to the materials. In roofing, battens were often incorporated into early handcrafted copper roofing to create a drainage path and allow the individual sheets of panels to be joined in a weather-resistant fashion. Today, roof battens steel are commonly used in modern roofing systems to enhance durability, provide structural support, and improve ventilation.

 

What to Look for When Selecting Roof Battens? 

To help make it easier to choose between the wide range of roofing battens on the market, we have put together a handy checklist of things to look out for: 

1. Grading stamp  

Only battens that have been pre- or factory-graded to BS 5534 are considered to be fully compliant roofing battens. If you have any doubts at all, check with the original manufacturer. Another additional quality assurance is third-party certification. 

2. Batten colour  

The issue of what roofing batten colors mean has caused some confusion. While the distinctive red colour of Battens does give peace of mind that you are using a BS 5534-compliant batten, this is not necessarily the case for all the coloured battens on the market. Please don’t ever assume that just because it is colored, a batten conforms to the standard. It must also have the right stamps and supporting documentation. Additionally, roof battens steel provide a durable and reliable alternative, offering enhanced strength and resistance to weather conditions.

3. Timber 

The kind of timber used for a roofing batten is significant. The tree species from which the wood has come should be stamped on the batten.  

4. Drying process  

Timber that is too wet is prone to mold growth and rot. However, it must be dried and controlled to prevent defects such as warping and splitting. Check that the battens you buy are kiln-dried, as this helps to stabilise the timber. 

5. Process of Grading  

Roofing battens must be pre-graded before they get to the site. This can be done visually or by only a machine. Mechanical grading, using camera and laser-scanning technology, and produces the most accurate and persistently graded roofing battens to deliver high accuracy, consistency and quality assurance. 

6. Quality checks  

Ask what quality checks the roof battens steel go through. They are quality-checked at every stage of the process. The raw materials are checked for conformity to our buying specifications. An operator is present during the scan process to check for compliance, and the battens are rechecked when the scan is complete. The batten pieces are also pulled from the production process every hour for a complete quality check for compliance with BS 5534.

7. Treatment 

Roofing battens should be preservative-treated to Use Class 2 in accordance with BS 8417. Different manufacturers use their types of preservative treatment and may offer various guarantees as a result.  

8. Sound Control 

Metal ceilings have been shown to bring superior acoustic performance compared to alternative materials. Metal has a remarkable ability to absorb sound, primarily when used with a mineral wall infill, making metal ceilings an appropriate choice for spaces requiring noise control. A metal ceiling’s capacity to absorb sound is primarily dictated by the number and the size of perforations in the tile and its sound-absorbing acoustic infill. The greater the perforated area, the more acoustically transparent is the tile. Additionally, roof battens steel can enhance structural support and durability when integrated into metal ceiling systems.
